Already today we see an increase in natural catastrophes due to rising temperatures - increasing ocean levels with the relating threats to coastal regions; more tornados and stronger hurricanes; flooding in some areas; and desertification in others. These incidences will tremendously increase in number and destruction potential if we are not able to reduce the rise of global temperatures to 2°C above pre-industrial conditions. If we continue to produce and use energy as we do today, a rise of more than 6°C is likely. In that case, the global landscape will change dramatically and coastal cities like New York or Hamburg can be expected to disappear. The costs for making up for the damages will increase accordingly and social and regional instabilities due to conflicts over resources will increase.
The use of fossil fuels does already affect us by
- the impact on the air quality – remember that for the Olympics 2008 Beijing had to shut down a large number of factories to ensure outdoor competitions
- dangerous subterranean mining can lead to whole blocks of land – even towns disappearing
- nuclear power accidents continue to occur and produce lasting damages to the area where the nuclear power plants are located but also effect regions far away from the original incidents
- finally we need to limit the quantity of nuclear garbage as no verified long term secure disposal could be developed until now. In Germany that means 10.800 tons accumulated radioactive garbage until 2022, when all nuclear power plants are phased out as currently planned.
Become part of a global network of people, dedicated to eliminating the world’s dependency on fossil fuels and the restoration of the environment. Help stabilizing our climate and improving air quality to secure the worldwide ecosystems and to conserve the diversity of our planet for our children and future generations to come.
